Heather Campbell, Paper Crafts Go-to Gal
Patterned paper is, without a doubt, one of my favorite crafting supplies.
Ok, I will admit it. I might even have a 6×6 patterned paper problem. Please tell me I’m not the only crafter that could be accused of loving a paper collection so much that I buy two 6×6 pads so I can obliterate one pad to bits and pieces and keep the other in pristine glory. Yes, I told you – it’s a slight problem.
Most of us probably fall into two categories when it comes to patterned paper. We either (a) buy it and use it down to the bits and pieces or (b) buy it and just look at it over and over again with no idea where to start. I often hear people say they struggle when it comes to using patterned paper.
I’ve had so much fun with my last few posts on design and technique I thought I’d let the analytical side of me take over again to share some basic design ideas for using patterned paper. (Be sure to check out my post on “grounding” for the full disclaimer!)

Hi & Hello card by Teri Anderson from August 2014
Teri Anderson used patterned paper on her Hi & Hello card to cover her entire card front. I could say Hi to this card all day long, Teri! I l adore the end result of pairing a simple pattern with a bold focal point. A tag or journaling card would look equally lovely on a pattern like this!

Live Your Dream card by Jocelyn Olson from August 2014
Jocelyn Olson consistently layers papers to perfection and her Live Your Dream card is no exception. Here she has layered multiple pieces of patterned paper behind a journaling card. The white space on the card base and journaling card keeps the paper from overwhelming the overall card design. This card is a dream, Jocelyn.

You’re a Gem by Alice Wertz from August 2014
Alice Wertz die-cut a simple single shape from various pieces of patterned paper and layered them together to create a single focal point. Also genius, Alice used vellum to overlay the sentiment on top of the patterned paper. Alice, this is a gem!

Feel Better Tissues card by Laura Bassen from April 2014
Paper piecing and patterned paper go hand in hand and oh my gosh does Laura Bassen show just how amazing patterned paper can look when paper pieced perfectly. This card is so sweet, Laura!
Not familiar with paper piecing or looking for some extra tips, check out this blog post on paper piecing.
Having devoured the pages of Paper Crafts & Scrapbooking magazine and the brand new Avery Elle 6×6 patterned paper pads, I had to get into my craft room!

Thank You card by Heather Campbell
First, I tried Teri’s technique of using the patterned paper to cover my entire card front. I used a Fancy Pants Designs ready made embellishment from an ephemera pack as my focal point for the card.

Balloon Birthday card by Heather Campbell
For my next card, I die-cut several balloon shapes from the same Avery Elle pads to create patterned paper balloons. These weren’t layered as much as Alice’s but they are fun and festive!
To share in the fun, I have one of each of the new Avery Elle 6×6 paper pads for one lucky commenter.
Leave a comment below telling me what your favorite patterned paper technique by 5:00 pm MDT on Friday, July 18.
Thank you so much for sharing part of your day with me! I hope you have a great day and perhaps go create something with pretty paper!
